SAYREVILLE — An older man jumped off of the Victory Bridge in Middlesex County this afternoon and is presumed dead after a several-hour search, officials said.

The man was seen walking from Sayreville up the eastern side of the Route 35 bridge at about 3:30 p.m. and then put one leg over the railing, said Perth Amboy Fire Chief Dave Volk.

A passing truck driver called out to him, but the man swung his other leg over and jumped into the Raritan River 140 feet below, Volk said.
