POMONA – A teenage girl was killed when she apparently walked in front of a freight train on Wednesday afternoon, a Union Pacific spokesman said.
The teen was identified as Elizabeth Reyes, 17, of Pomona, said a Los Angeles County coroner’s investigator.
Members of the Pomona Police Department responded to the area of First Street and Oak Avenue after receiving a call at 12:04 p.m. reporting the incident, said Sgt. Hector Rodriguez.
Members of the Union Pacific police also responded to the incident and are investigating it, said Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt.
“At about noon a female pedestrian stepped in front of the train,” Hunt said.
“It happened so fast our train crew didn’t have time to sound the horn,” he said.
The two-person crew, consisting of an engineer and a conductor, took steps for an emergency stop, Hunt said.
