Cyclist’s Death Brings Calls For Sharing Road

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Friends of a bicyclist who was struck and killed on a Hilliard street are pressing their calls for greater awareness of cyclists on the roads.

Stephen Barbour died July 18 around 6 a.m. while riding on Cemetery Road, 10TV’s Brittany Westbrook reported.

A grand jury on Wednesday indicted Edward Miller for aggravated vehicular homicide, drunken driving and other charges in Barbour’s death. Police said Miller, 28, was driving a pickup truck that struck Barbour. According to police, a breath analysis showed Miller’s blood-alcohol content was a 0.10, which is over the legal limit.

“We feel the legal system hopefully will deal with this in a fair manner,” said Gail Falkinburg, a friend of Barbour.

Falkinburg told 10TV News her focus is not on Miller, but on ensuring that drivers and cyclists are able to share the road safely.

“It’s getting more dangerous every day in all parts of town,” Falkinburg said.

Falkinburg said cyclists have a right to the road and should not be demonized by drivers for asserting that right.

“We’re just other human beings so please treat us that way,” Falkinburg said.

Miller’s attorney Tim Huey told 10TV News that Barbour’s death was a tragic situation, and he cautioned that people should not rush to judgment until all the evidence is heard.

A memorial ride is being planned for Barbour, but Falkinburg does not know whether she will participate. She has not been back on her bike since Barbour was killed.

“I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to ride it again because this ghost is now with me,” Falkinburg said.

Shikellamy graduate killed in accident

LEWIS RUN — A 50-year-old Shikellamy High School graduate died of injuries suffered in a crash in Corydon Township, McKean County, when a pickup truck spun out of control on a wet road and ran into the car in which she was a passenger, state police at Kane said.

Sherry L. Hayter, of Lewis Run, a 1976 Shikellamy graduate, was one of four passengers in the eastbound 2002 Buick Century, which was driven by her sister, Cathy J. DiBonaventura, 52, of Sunbury, troopers said. The Ford F-150 truck, driven by Jay C. Darwin, 52, of Sugargrove, slid out of the westbound lane in heavy rain, crossed the center line, hit the passenger side of the Buick and rolled over. The accident happened at 4:13 p.m. Tuesday on Route 59, two miles west of the Warren County line.

Hayter was taken from the crash scene by ambulance to Warren General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Cristen J. Deibler, 25, of Sunbury, also a passenger in the Buick, was taken to the same hospital with what police described as a major injury, but a nursing supervisor refused to release any information on her condition Thursday night.

DiBonaventura and the other two passengers in her car, 5-year-old girls, also from Sunbury, were injured as well, according to police. The children were in child-safety seats, and all of the others were secured by seat belts.

Darwin, the driver of the Ford, suffered minor injuries but refused treatment, police said.

Hayter was a graduate of the Geisinger School of Nursing. She formerly was a private-duty nurse, specializing in pediatric care.

There will be a private family funeral at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Sunbury. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
