HARTFORD—Kerry Foster Jr. was a bright young man who worked hard in school, made friends easily, loved sports and made his parents proud.At Fox Middle School, where he was in eighth grade, he was known as KJ, for Kerry Jr., or the Senator, thanks to his gift for gab.His family, his school and his wider community of fellow athletes was devastated when he died May 28, 2006, the victim of gun violence that was consuming his north end neighborhood. Kerry and a friend, Cinque Sutherland, 14, were in the front yard of Kerry’s parents’ Clark Street home when he fell to bullets fired in a drive-by shooting. Sutherland was grievously wounded but survived.
