A 25-year-old Marine who served overseas was identified as the person killed at Caples Lake on April 15. Benjamin Keith Rauschenberger, 25, of Elwood, Ind., was travelling on Highway 88 and went over the edge of the roadway, landing 25 yards from the road, according to the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office. Rauschenberger was stationed at Pickel Meadows Mountain Warfare Training Center. The accident occurred at about 4:45 p.m. during a snowstorm. No one saw the accident occur. A California Highway Patrol officer on routine patrol spotted the accident scene at about 5 p.m., according to CHP spokesman Jeff Gartner.

CPL Benjamin Keith Rauschenberger, age 25, of Elwood, passed away of injuries from a car accident on April 15, 2013, in Alpine, CA. Benjamin was born on February 7, 1988, to Brian and Jamie (Brookens) Rauschenberger in Indianapolis. Benjamin had worked in law enforcement in Hobe Sound Florida before joining the U. S. Marines. While in the Marines he was stationed at Bridgeport, CA. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., on Friday, April 26, 2011, at the Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor John Parker of the Village Park Bible Methodist Church in Westfield assisted by Pastor Mark Potter, will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Marion National Cemetery in Marion IN with the U.S. Marine Corp. Honor Guard conducting full military honors. Everyone is invited to the National Guard Armory located at 521 E. 5th St. in Marion following the services.
