Official: 4 Americans killed in attack at U.S. base in Afghanistan – CNN.com

(CNN) — Four Americans were killed during a rocket attack at Bagram Air Base, outside of Kabul, a Pentagon official said Tuesday on the condition of anonymity.

The U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force confirmed that four NATO coalition service members had been killed in an attack but did not disclose the nationality of the casualties or the exact location of the attack.

ISAF said the four were killed in an “attack in eastern Afghanistan.”

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the group said in a statement.

News of the casualties came as NATO-led troops transferred security responsibility to Afghan forces.

U.S. diplomat died ‘doing what she loved’ in Afghanistan – CNN.com

(CNN) — Anne Smedinghoff lived inside a heavily secured compound.

But the public diplomacy officer for the U.S. Embassy in Kabul was always pushing to get out.

“She particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work directly with the Afghan people,” her parents said in a statement, “and was always looking for opportunities to reach out and help make a difference in the lives of those living in a country ravaged by war.”

This weekend, the 25-year-old was trying to do just that — delivering books to a school in southern Afghanistan — when a suicide bomber smashed into her convoy Saturday. She is believed to be the first U.S. diplomat killed since the September attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Official: Navy SEAL killed, 2nd injured in Arizona training exercise – CNN.com

(CNN) — A Navy SEAL killed in a parachute training accident this week in Arizona belonged to the same elite squad that includes those chosen to go after Osama bin Laden in Pakistan two years ago, a source familiar with the matter said.

It was the second deadly military training accident in as many weeks and the third notable one in the United States since February. The other two killed 14 Marines combined in a mortar explosion and a helicopter collision.

The latest incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time on Thursday in a rugged part of the U.S. Special Operations Command facility at Pinal Airpark, military officials said on Friday.

Two sailors were undergoing a free-fall routine before opening their parachutes, a Navy official said in a statement, which added it was a normal exercise to maintain readiness.
