Police gunfire killed Hofstra University student, official says – CNN.com

New York (CNN) — A Hofstra University student who died during a confrontation between a home invasion suspect and authorities was killed by police gunfire, a Nassau County, New York, police spokeswoman said Saturday.

Police fired eight shots at the intruder, who authorities say was holding a gun to the head of Andrea Rebello, 21, during a home invasion robbery Friday at an off-campus house in Uniondale.

One of the shots hit Rebello in the head, killing her, police spokeswoman Maureen Roach said.

Also killed was the intruder, whom authorities identified as Dalton Smith, 30, of Hempstead. He was struck seven times.

Authorities say Smith was wearing a mask. He invaded the home Rebello shared with her twin sister and two others during the predawn hours on Friday.

A Henry County teenager was killed when the car she was a passenger in crashed while fleeing from police, the Georgia State Patrol said Wednesday.Marion Ahlexus Shore, 19, of McDonough, died at the scene of the Tuesday afternoon wreck when the 2012 Toyota Corolla she was in left I-85 and crashed in Franklin County in northeast Georgia, a spokesman for the GSP said.A Banks County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the Toyota, but the driver refused to stop, the GSP said. A trooper became involved in the pursuit on I-85 around mile marker 166, just north of the Lavonia exit.

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) – A man suspected of breaking into cars Thursday morning in Little Rock died a few hours after a shootout with police.

Kenzell Hobbs, 18, was one of three suspects. A second man, 18-year-old Roy Boles, was arrested without incident. Gary Coleman, 21, was arrested later.

A witness who spoke with Channel 7 News on condition of anonymity said she was woken up a few minutes before 6:00 by the sound of four gunshots.

“I looked outside and there was a man, an African-American, about 18 years old with a hood on with black pants.”

She called 9-1-1 when she claims he tried to hide in her crawl space. Police on motorcycles, in cars, on foot and with K-9 units combed the area.

Boles was arrested without incident. Hobbs was caught at H Street and University, but got away until about 7:30 a.m.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – Hendrick Motorsports was shaken by the news Friday that the MIT officer killed during the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects was the brother of Andrew Collier, a machinist in its engine shop.

Sean Collier was found shot to death late Thursday in his vehicle in Cambridge, Mass. Authorities have said Collier was responding to a report of a disturbance when he was shot.

An unidentified suspect who shot an Alpharetta police officer three times Friday night was killed following a high-speed chase, closing Ga. 400 southbound for several hours, a police spokesman said.

The officer is in stable condition at North Fulton Hospital and is expected to recover, said Alpharetta Police Ofc. George Gordon. A female motorist shot by the suspect as he fled from police was taken to the same hospital and is expected to be okay, he said.
