Accident at Arkansas nuclear site kills man – CNN.com

(CNN) — An accident at a nuclear facility in Arkansas killed one person Sunday, a county coroner said.

The accident took place “in a non-radiation area, and there has been no risk to public health and safety identified,” the Arkansas Department of Health said in a statement.

The facility is Arkansas Nuclear One, a water reactor in Russellville.

 

Pope County Coroner Leonard Krout said the victim was Wade Walters, 24, of Russellville.

Construction worker killed; Investigation will slow traffic | late, night, beach – Northwest Florida Daily News

FORT WALTON BEACH — A man working on the Eglin Parkway resurfacing project was struck and killed by a motorist Tuesday night.

Frank Thomas Donson, 56, of Pensacola was pronounced dead at the scene after he was hit about 11:50 p.m. just south of Katherine Street, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Crews have been resurfacing Eglin from Shalimar to U.S. Highway 98 since spring. On Tuesday night the center turn lane and southbound inside lane and middle lane were blocked off from traffic as men and equipment were on the job.

Michael David Stull, 35, of Fort Walton Beach, was driving north in the inside lane of Eglin when he drifted left into the construction zone in the southbound lanes, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Contractor killed while working under Webb Road home | Dothan Eagle

A Dothan man working on an air conditioning unit Thursday morning died while working in the crawl space underneath the house, located on Webb Road.

Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said 44-year-old Roy Lawson Ford died from what appeared to be electrocution while working in the crawl space of a house.

Byrd said Ford was being taken to Montgomery for an autopsy at the state Department of Forensic Sciences.

BRANDON, Miss. — A guard was killed and, at one point, hostages were taken during a riot at a Mississippi prison that holds illegal immigrants, authorities said.

The Sunday riot at the privately run Adams County Correctional Center in southwest Mississippi began around 2:40 p.m. CDT and involved dozens of inmates before it was brought under control that night.

Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield told the Natchez Democrat that 15 employees were freed at one time during the uprising by opening a fence and protecting the route with guns. The sheriff said in a statement early Monday that there were at least two dozen hostages being held at one time.

Adams County Coroner James Lee confirmed that a guard died, but said he could not provide any other details until the correctional officer’s family was notified. In addition to the guard who was killed, five other correctional officers and three inmates were injured.

Emilee Beach, a spokeswoman at the Adams County Correctional Center said that after the disturbance was brought under control Sunday night, inmates were being searched and sent back to their cells.

2 Chicago firefighters killed in blaze; 19 injured

Chicago (CNN) — Two Chicago firefighters were killed Wednesday and 19 were injured, when a wall and roof collapsed without warning in an abandoned building on the city’s south side, the city’s fire department said.

None of the injuries was life-threatening, said Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff in an afternoon news conference. One firefighter was in stable condition, he said.

Hoff identified those killed as Corey Ankum, who had been with the department less than two years, and 12-year veteran Edward Stringer. Both were inside the structure. Other firefighters were working the blaze from the roof.

The deaths came on the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Stockyards fire, which killed 21 firefighters and the city fire marshal.
