Producer/Anchor Hit Covering Wreck On I-95

longtime television newsman in Savannah has died after being struck by a car while covering an accident story.Steven Shoob, who gathers news overnight and anchors morning news updates at WTOC, was killed early Monday while returning to his car near the accident scene on Interstate 95.WTOC news director Larry Silbermann said Shoob had responded to reports of a serious wreck on I-95 southbound near the South Carolina line.

In 2003, he won three Associated Press awards and the station’s first Emmy.”He was just sort of the cornerstone of local news coverage,” retired WTOC anchorman and news director Doug Weathers told the station. “He was just terrific, there’s no question about it. You could always rely on what Steven was reporting. He filled so many shoes. He did a great job.”Shoob was born and raised in Savannah and graduated from Savannah High School. He had worked for WTOC since 1987 when he started out as the weekend producer, reporter, photographer and assignment editor.Staff sometimes refered to him as the phantom producer because he works overnight when many of the station’s employees are gone.Shoob’s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bonaventure Cemetery.
