Auburn freshman from Hoover dies after wreck

An Auburn University student has been killed in a three-car accident on Alabama Highway 14 in Lee County.

Coroner Bill Harris said Thursday that 18-year-old Andrew J. Jackson Thurmond IV, a freshman from Hoover, died shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday when the car in which he was riding apparently ran off the road at a high rate of speed, returned and collided head-on with a second vehicle, then spun and was hit broadside in the passenger side by a third vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was airlifted to Columbus Regional Medical Center in Columbus, Ga., while injuries to others were described as non-life threatening.

Harris said Thurmond was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Scott Leighton, an Auburn University student whose home was listed as Kildeer, Ill.

I feel very sorry for all these kids and parents involved. My heart goes out to the parents and family of Andrew. Also I feel very bad for Scott and his parents. To carry that with you must be extremely difficult to think about everyday. Unfortunately, accidents happen, and kids are gonna go through temptations and peer pressure. (Friends, college, girls, drinking, etc..)
This is a very horrible tragedy to suffer for everyone involved. If I could offer any words to all of those involved, “go to God and seek healing, wisdom, forgivness, and courage to go on. When Bad things happen, it is easy to say “Where is God”? But trust me, he is there. If you call on him, he will see you through this.
