Destin man died after driver lost control of speedboat | destin, lost, speedboat – Northwest Florida Daily News

DESTIN — One of Destin’s own died in a speedboat accident near Crab Island late Saturday afternoon.

Search crews found 40-year-old Tommy Shelton dead in the water a couple hours after the 30-foot boat spun out and tossed all four passengers into the water.

The boat was traveling in about 13-feet-deep water on the northeast side of Crab Island near channel marker 16 when the driver lost control, said Stan Kirkland with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. The boat went into a head spin and ejected the passengers, but did not overturn.

The Sunsation high-performance speedboat is owned by 33-year-old Jason Wellborn of Craigsford, Ala., Kirkland reported. His fiance, 33-year-old Hillary Hall, also of Craigsford, was driving the boat at the time of the accident.

Wellborn, Hall and Shelton’s wife, Kendal, also from Destin, were quickly pulled from the water.

Kirkland said a number of Good Samaritans pitched in to help.

Shelton could not be immediately located.
