VSU probing security breach at apartments where student was killed – Richmond Times-Dispatch: Crime News

Virginia State University is investigating how 30 to 40 young partygoers, including a gunman, entered a gated and secured student housing complex off-campus where a 22-year-old VSU student was shot to death at a party Thursday night.

University Apartments at Ettrick, which is owned by the VSU Real Estate Foundation, has two security guards on duty round the clock, and everyone who enters must pass through a security checkpoint or locked gate, VSU spokesman Tom Reed said.

Students who live at the complex, about a half-mile from campus, must swipe an identification card through an electronic reader to enter through a gate. Vehicles must pass through a checkpoint manned by a security officer.
