Authorities are investigating an accidental drowning that claimed the life of a teenager Sunday off New Asia Road.
Jaylen Davis-Williams, 14, died when he was unable to swim back to shore, said Sgt. Dale Phillips, commander of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit.
Phillips said the teenager and two of his friends found a boat at the edge of a private lake at about 5:30 p.m.
Davis-Williams and one of the other youths got in the boat and pushed off into the water. The boat lacked a paddle, however, and the youths attempted to row it back to shore with their hands.
At some point, Davis-Williams and the other youth got into the water and attempted to swim to shore.
