Former Rutgers basketball star Keith Hughes died this weekend.

He was 45.

The Carteret native transferred into the Scarlet Knights program after two years with Syracuse in time for the 1989-90 season. He arrival in Piscataway helped propel Rutgers to the NIT in his junior season and finally a NCAA Tournament as a senior, when Hughes was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.

As a senior, Hughes averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds, leading Rutgers to its last NCAA appearance.
