A 44-year-old Jacksonville man convicted of murder could be one step closer to the death penalty.
A jury found Rodney Newberry guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery in the shooting death of 43-year-old Terrese Pernell Stevens (pictured below) outside a Northside nightclub in December 2009. The jury then voted 8-4 to recommend the death penalty for Newberry.
On Friday, the court held a Spencer hearing, in which the defense brought forward pieces of evidence showing he’d been the victim of violence in the past. Defense attorneys also presented Newberry’s school records. They said he should receive life in prison and not be sentenced to death.
