2 W. Virginia coal miners killed – CNN.com

(CNN) — Two coal miners lost their lives Monday night after they became trapped inside a mine in Boone County, West Virginia, a U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman told CNN Tuesday.

A ground failure occurred at the Brody Mine No. 1, owned by Brody Mining, LLC, MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere said.

The two miners became trapped and did not survive, she said.

The bodies have been recovered, and the agency will conduct an investigation into the incident, Louviere said.

The cause of the ground failure was not immediately known.

The Brody Mine No. 1, however, has been cited in the past for safety violations.

There was a “pattern of violations” and repeated failure to meet mandatory safety standards at the mine, according to an October 2013 letter from the MSHA to mining company.
