Man Charged In Boating Death


A Gloucester man is facing homicide charges after a boat crash off the coast of Dartmouth last month killed another boater.The Bristol County District Attorney’s office said it will be filing a criminal complaint in New Bedford District Court charging Fred M. Bevins III, 60, of Gloucester in the boat crash that killed David J, Walsh, 64, of South Dartmouth.Bevins was the alleged operator of The Reasons, a 63-foot motor boat that crashed into The Priority, a 35-feet sailboat, which Walsh was aboard, according to the district attorney’s office.

Walsh died from injuries suffered in the collision while his friend, Warren Hathaway, who was also aboard the sailboat, suffered minor injuries from the crash.

If convicted, Bevins could face between 30 days to 30 months behind bars, or up to $3,000 fine, or both. A conviction would also causes a loss of his boating license for 10 years.
