Fla. officer ran over, killed suspect during chase

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) – A Pensacola police officer was placed on
leave after running over and killing a bicyclist he was pursuing.

Authorities say 35-year-old Jerald Ard was following a man from
a construction site early Saturday. Ard flashed his lights, but the
unidentified victim didn’t pull over.
Investigators say Ard unsuccessfully shot a stun gun out his
window. The suspect then turned into a parking lot, crashed his
bicycle and was run over by Ard’s car.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement wouldn’t release
details, but witnesses told The Pensacola News Journal the police
cruiser jumped a curb and dragged the man 10 to 15 feet.

The FDLE is investigating Ard’s use of force, and the Highway
Patrol is handling the crash.
