Avalanche in Canada kills 2, injures 30

(CNN) — Two people were killed and 30 injured when an avalanche struck a snowmobile competition in western Canada, authorities said Sunday.

About 200 people were at the Saturday event when the avalanche hit on a mountain in British Columbia, said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, a spokesman for Revelstoke police.

Police were still making rounds at hotels in an effort to determine how many people were still unaccounted for, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.

Emergency crews used various resources, including canine units, to search for survivors after officials cleared the area.

The accident occurred during the “Big Iron Shoot out” event on Boulder mountain near Revelstoke.

Late Saturday, authorities had said that three people were killed in the avalanche.
