A driver shot by a Dothan police officer following a brief chase on Montgomery Highway has died from his injuries.
Numerous law enforcement officers responded to the 1500 block of Montgomery Highway around 4 p.m. Thursday after a police officer shot a possible felony suspect following a brief vehicle pursuit.
Dothan Police Cpl. Rachel David said the person who was shot has died. His name has not yet been released.
Dothan Police Chief Greg Benton said the incident occured in the parking lot of a business at 1528 Montgomery Highway following a very short police pursuit.
“The pursuit was in relation to what the officer thought was a felony warrant,” Benton said.
The person being pursued appears to have been shot by the officer before running into a building, also injuring a person inside. Benton said the suspect who was shot was possibly trying to run over the police officer before being shot.
Kendrick Whatley was in the middle of cutting a customer’s hair Thursday afternoon at his business when he saw a police chase end in gunfire in the parking lot outside.
Whatley, who is part owner of Upper Cuts Barber Shop in the Village Plaza located in the 1500 block of Montgomery Highway, said he’s never witnessed a shooting before.
“I ain’t expecting anybody to have no high speed chase in our parking lot,” Whatley said. “It’s way out of the ordinary.”
Dothan Police Sgt. Rachel David said the officer-involved shooting led to the death of a man, who had not been identified as of press time on Thursday.
David said limited details of what happened during the shooting were being released. She also said agents with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation have taken over the investigation because it’s an officer-involved shooting.
But Dothan Police Chief Greg Benton did release some details of the shooting, which began with a short police pursuit around 4 p.m. read more…
